Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Outback?

There have been no definitive boundaries set to identify the Outback.

The philosophy of the ongoing process is that the Outback is not confined to any geographic area but is symbolic of the entire Australian continent - a unifying national symbol embracing all Australians.

The ongoing Outback Calling process is for all Australians, wherever they live - presenting an invitation to individuals, communities and organisations, city and country, to respond to their innate identification with the Outback.

As the author Jocelyn Burt writes:

There is no specific boundary to the Outback
some even say it begins and ends in our minds

This is supported by those beautiful words by poet and musician Leighton B Watts:

It's a place they call The Outback and we're never far apart
For the Outback's not a place at all it's the beating of my heart

Q. Is there any cost to register an Event/ Activity of Project?

A. There is no cost for registering an Event/ Activity/ Project or in turn being included in the National Outback Calling Calendar.

Q. Does the Calendar of Events listing only include such events as festivals etc?

A. Absolutely not. The Calendar is designed to include events, activities and projects quite diverse and varied in nature ranging from Country Rumbles to forums and congresses to Rodeos to 4WD Events to Cattle Droves to Art Shows to Competitions and the list goes on.

Q. Where can I find the Calendar of Events?

A. The National Outback Calling Calendar is featured on this site and can be accessed by clicking "National Calendar Listing". As has been the case in the past, the listing will also be promoted and excerpts featured in “Outback Online” the official Outback Calling electronic newsletter.

Q. Where do I need to be geographically located to host an event/activity/project that will be eligible for listing under the National Outback Calling Calendar?

A. The National Outback Calling Calendar is for all Australians wherever they live.

There are no geographical boundaries with regards to where Events/ Activities/ Projects must take place, as long as they compliment the philosophy of the Outback Calling processand focus on rural, regional and remote Australia - for example, whilst the Royal Shows take place in capital cities, they are still clearly eligible, with their focus on "bringing the country to the city'.

Q. Is there funding available for specific projects?

A. Outback Calling Ltd is not a funding body and there are no grants available through the organisation for individual projects. There are however, a number of Government Grant schemes in place at State and Federal levels for this very purpose and event organisers are encouraged to investigate the options available through these schemes.

Websites featuring such Grants include:
