Year of the Outback Logo Background Story

In the year 2000 a nationwide competition for the design of a logo for "2002 Year of the Outback' was conducted with the support of Rural Press. The winning design by former Charles Sturt University student, Elizabeth Robinson of Wagga Wagga, captured the spirit of the year.

The logo's colours, red and blue, were indicative of inland Australia with blue for the night sky and red for the red earth. At the centre of the logo was the Southern Cross, an Australian icon and guide for travellers.

Reaching towards the Southern Cross were a series of trails which represent the stories or marks which the Australian people, first the Aborigines and then the white settlers, explorers and pioneers, have left in the outback.

The logo is in the shape of Australia to signify focussing undivided attention on our outback and has now also been adapted for the ongoing Outback Calling process.
